Roles: Playing and Creating a Brilliant Film Finals and MFA Show Event

It is not uncommon to start planning an event months in advance, sometimes even a year in advance. As part of our hands on learning experience, we will be putting the 2011 Film Previews and Film Finals and the Spring MFA Show. We have lots to do, are you ready for the journey?

First of all, it is important to acknowledge and honor the fact that we are working collaboratively as a team, and each of us will take on particular roles. This means that if we don’t give our best, the energy of the group and event will feel it. When you don’t show up (physically, or when you are not present in class or flake on your action item), it effects us all, so be mindful of that. That said, this can be an exhilarating, inspiring, empowering and overall awesome experience. And, yes, it will be fun, fun, fun.

Some ways to alleviate event stress are to plan, make systems, be organized, and also be mindful of your own working styles. This tells you what you need from others, what you can give to others, and also drops hints of where you can give and take when needed as well as how to best complement each others strengths and weaknesses. You may be asking, what isn’t this a class about film curation and exhibition? Yup, and at it’s core it still is about playing nice with others.

What role do you like to play? Leader, Team Player, Creative, Practical, Coordinator, Organizer, Cheerleader, Fun Times Reminder, Calm Presence, Diligent Worker, Techie, Filmmaker, Producer, Designer, Networker, Lover…just checking to see if were still reading. Think about the role you take on when working in a group. This will be helpful information YOU can use to best work with OTHERS! We are putting on two events TOGETHER, so let’s figure out how we can work it out. (ok, I get the irony of the these lyrics, but the melody is nice and the quote was so ripe!)

Also, this is a learning experience, so do your best, ask for help, help others. And last but not least, if you experience difficult conflict with another class member or external person, come to me and I can advise how best to resolve the situation. If you feel you are trying and not getting action oriented responses from your team members, after your several attempts of approaching this, do let me know so I can help. This may read premature at this stage, and hopefully it will remain premature, but I’m mentioning this, just in case

Roles defined take 2:

In class we will break up into sub committees (roles),  and start preparing for the film finals and MFA screening event. How we will differentiate who does what for which event is a big TBD, but let’s get going and see how things evolve!

I’ve listed some POSSIBLE committee breakdown and tasks. This is not a definitive list, but a good starting point. Once you are self-assigned a committee, you will be in charge of coming up the list of things to do, time line, deadlines and action items. Luckily I have lots of notes from what we did last year, and I do always have 75 cents to throw in the pot, so expect help along the way but be prepared to take full responsibility. The buck starts and stops with you! Thanks for the indulgence of this quote, but really, it is you who will make this a successful event, so take responsibility and ownership, and have fun!

Plan to meet with your groups next Friday February 25 and present all the amazing tasks and future action items you have generated to me Friday March 4.

Meet with groups next Friday and do what, present what March 4? Visit our Event To Duties Section and find out more.
